Storytelling with Data

Stacie Furia, Santa Barbara Foundation

Ellen Kwiatkowski, LegacyWorks Group

Michelle Heaton, LegacyWorks Group

How can data help us tell the story of our organizations?

  • Well-chosen data integrated into an organization’s story can support and reinforce that story and the organization’s goals, purpose, and approach.

  • Data stories can be reactive (helps identify the problem), proactive (allows one to avoid or accelerate), or predictive (identifies patterns to help anticipate).

  • One can use data for discrete, operational, or strategic decision making. Each level involves different types of data sources and different levels of engagement with the data.

Finding Your Best Time, Energy, and Focus

Sara Caputo, Sara Caputo Consulting

  • Know what lives in your Top Triangle as a leader:  Understand what your highest and best use of time is for your role (and share this with your team).  Leverage your strengths!

  • Understand Your Urgent vs Important:  Get clear on what is under your iceberg (important, strategic projects) and stay accountable to blocked time in order to plan well and get it done!

  • Communication shapes focus: Use your communication as your most effective productivity tool - communicate with clarity, expectations and kindness. Encourage your team to do the same!

Descubrir su Mejor Momento, Energia y Concentracion

Sara Caputo, Sara Caputo Consulting

Communicating Across Differences

Facilitators: Jarrod Schwartz, Equity Praxis and Tammy Sims Johnson, Santa Barbara Foundation

Panelists: Daniel Mora, Laborers International Union of North America (LiUNA) Local 585 and Abrah Stewart, CFROG

  • Time is Key: Building the trust and respect needed to communicate and partner effectively across difference takes time. And it's not just up-front time. It takes time up front AND on-going time to continue the relationship, deepen the trust, and work through miscommunication, differences, and disagreements.

  • Boundaries are Essential: It's important to establish boundaries up front to set the container for what will be discussed and/or partnered on and what will not be part of the discussion and/or partnership. This helps keep the conversation and partnership focused on areas of agreement or on specific areas of disagreement that are ripe for exploration. Boundaries help all parties understand what is off-limits—at least for the time being. Boundaries can be and should be renegotiated over time as the scope of what's in them may change and evolve as the relationship deepens.

  • Look Beneath the Surface Noise for Opportunities to Connect: Though we may disagree on strategies, tactics, etc., we can often find agreement on core values, needs, fears, etc. Often we get so focused on the disagreements that we miss hearing or seeing the opportunities for connection

  • Work from the same side of the table - across from the problem: It is helpful to place the problem on the opposite side of the table and invite ourselves as problem solvers to work together, collaborating on the problem rather than our positions, as a way to overcome differences.

  • Empathy is a Bridge: Even if we don't agree with the other person's perspective, belief, or ideas, having empathy for who they are and how they arrived at the place they arrived at can make communication easier and more effective.

Comunicación más allá de las Diferencias

Facilitadores: Jarrod Schwartz, Equity Praxis and Tammy Sims Johnson, Santa Barbara Foundation

Panelists: Daniel Mora, Laborers International Union of North America (LiUNA) Local 585 and Abrah Stewart, CFROG

Partnering with AI

Michael Kass, Story & Spirit (Keynote Speaker)

  • The 'Age of AI' can be reframed as the 'Age of Rehumaning.' By being so good at linear synthesis and pattern analysis, AI invites us to reconsider what 'intelligence' is an lean into those capacities that are uniquely human: creativity, relationship, connection, etc.

  • There is no one conversation about AI right now. We're all in different places in regards to our comfort with, use of, and understanding of AI. If anyone says that their way of using it or their system is 'the right way,' chances are that they're trying to sell you something.

  • Used with discernment, strategy, and vision, AI can be a force multiplier for capacity strapped teams and organizations.

Colaboración con la IA

Michael Kass, Story & Spirit (Ponente Principal)

Leading Through Ongoing Crises

Facilitator: Kristen Caloca, Kairos Strategies
Speakers: Teresa Alvarez, Carpinteria Children’s Project and Erik Talkin, Foodbank of Santa Barbara County

  • Relationships are one of our greatest sources of strength in a crisis. The time to build trust isn’t when the crisis hits. Invest in relationships every day with your team, your partners, your funders and your community.

  • Crisis can create space for innovation. It can force us to question assumptions we’ve held for a long time, see possibilities we might have missed, and reframe a difficult moment as an opportunity to do something differently.

  • Talk more - Find more ways to get the whole team together in different settings, in person, online, trainings. Get them to try and identify and talk about the real stressors the crisis brings to them personally, not just the organization. Maybe there is fear of job loss because of uncertain times.

  • Do what you can to act on the talk - More training for the crisis, more practical and mental health support. Every organization can find more size-appropriate ways of thanking staff or giving more working flexibility.

  • Go high - Try taking the team to a higher level in your discussions - why are you doing what you are doing? What is the community that you want to create? Keep going until you have everyone engaged and arrive at the point where everyone can agree. Then you can begin to move back down to the practical levels of what needs to be done and who is going to do it.

  • Keep to your North Star - We are in a time where distraction and ‘flooding the zone’ are an intentional tactic to keep you stuck in a responsive mode and being defined by someone else’s agenda. Deal with the tactical whack a mole, but make sure there is time, money and focus left for what you know will define your work in the future.

We closed our session with a poem from Wendell Berry who passed away on Monday. It felt so fitting:

The Peace of Wild Things
by Wendell Berry

When despair for the world grows in me

and I wake in the night at the least sound

in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,

I go and lie down where the wood drake

rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.

I come into the peace of wild things

who do not tax their lives with forethought

of grief. I come into the presence of still water.

And I feel above me the day-blind stars

waiting with their light. For a time

I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Liderar en Tiempos de Crisis Continuas

Facilitador: Kristen Caloca, Kairos Strategies
Oradores: Teresa Alvarez, Carpinteria Children’s Project and Erik Talkin, Foodbank of Santa Barbara County
